FERA CEO participates in a roundtable discussion on AI in the European film sector

On 10 September, FERA CEO Pauline Durand-Vialle participated in a high-level roundtable discussion on the use and impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the European film and audiovisual sector. The event was organised by the European Film Agency Directors association (EFAD) and took place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The discussion was hosted by Members of the European Parliament (MEP) Axel Voss, rapporteur on the Copyright and Generative AI report, and Laurence Farreng, shadow rapporteur, with interventions by CULT Committee Chair Nela Riehl, Vice-Chair Emma Rafowicz, and Coordinator Hannes Heide.
The discussion was prompted by a presentation by Jonathan Ho focused on an ethical approach to AI development and training in filmmaking, reminding the importance of authors control over the use of their work, copyright protection, including by prioritising an opt in approach, and the need to overcome the sterile opposition between innovation and creativity & respect of authors’ rights.
As MEP Emma Rafowicz reminded participants, this is not about opposing technology. Rather, it is about creating a framework where innovation and creativity can coexist, ensuring that copyright protection and fair remuneration remain aligned with European values.
